Report Summary
The Consumer Experience of Public Healthcare Web Sites
Survey Results on User Trust, Task Completion Rates, Outcomes and Perceptions of Costs
A basic premise of consumer directed healthcare (CDH) (and current thinking about the Web in general) is that the Web empowers consumers by making a wide variety of health and wellness, and cost and quality information publicly and freely available. This report presents the results of a comprehensive survey of user perceptions and experience of publicly available healthcare information sites, ranging from wellness portals sponsored by hospitals and health insurance providers to .orgs and .govs. We identify the extent to which users are successful using publicly available hospital quality tools from the California Healthcare Foundation and the Leapfrog Group, and health and wellness portals from WebMD and Aetna Intellihealth. We measure the likelihood of users to exhibit desired behaviors after using online resources, and we assess the opinions of users about trust, costs, and content and feature priorities.
